Financial Crisis Hits Home in Charlotte NC
The Financial Crisis Hits Home
The loss of Wachovia's headquarters now threatens big change in Charlotte NC. Citigroup will now have a more 'known' presence here in Charlotte and we must sit back, adapt and embrace these changes. That said, the pain is still sharp: Charlotte residents fear that their retirement accounts have or are going to 'shrink,' neighbors fear the loss of their Wachovia friends; children fear the loss of their Wachovia buddies. This financial crisis truly hits us ALL!How much has Wachovia given to our wonderful City? Many of us have partaken in community projects in which Wachovia has donated heftily. And, who in Charlotte doesn't own stock in Wachovia in one way, shape or form?
Who hasn't driven or flown by Charlotte without breathing a prideful breath as the gorgeous Wachovia skyscraper comes into view? And, what about those fabulous art shows, seminars or celebrations in the atrium or one of the grande rooms in the tower of the One Wachovia Center (the third tallest building in Charlotte)?Granted, the building will remain but, we're surely going to miss 'the way it was.'
Local economists have cautioned that the repercussion of the new Citigroup purchase of Wachovia may not become as much of an impact on our community as some may have feared. Some speculate that the high-paying, senior jobs are threatened but, economists feel that our diverse regional economy offers a variety of lateral and superior jobs for those who lose their Wachovia jobs. We've also learned that because there are no Citigroup bank branches here, the Wachovia branches are expected to be safe.
I have numerous friends and clients who have been affected by our current financial situation (and not just the news of today but, in recent months as well). I'd just like to say that there IS help out there for you and there are many of us who are there for you should you need us. Wachovia, you've helped shape our beautiful city and make it what it is today. We'll miss that beautiful blue/green logo all over the city.Citigroup, take care of our Wachovia friends and relatives; we know that you too, will fall in love with Charlotte just as Wachovia did.
